Chapter Five
HAGAR was still grinning as he watched his cargo of whiskey being unloaded. Genji was replacing it with a load of high grade sake, which he could sell cheap to Mama when he made it back there. That is, if he survived. Shibito hadnt said anything after he made his deal with Genji and had made sure that they werent alone so that Hagar couldnt ask him any questions: who he was exactly, whether he was really a ninja, and just how crazy his cousin the emperor was. As far as Hagar was concerned, who Shibito really was would be a good question to start with. Hagar was wondering what he had gotten himself into, but he also realized he couldnt walk away from this mess even if he wanted to. Shibito had gone back to looking fragile again, and he wasnt sure he even wanted to know why… or why he was starting to care about the man.
Hagar tried to appear unconcerned as Genji strode up to him, followed by a couple of monks. They stopped, trailing the man about five feet away from Hagar, and he was glad for some illusion of privacy. He could tell that Genji was in charge, even though he was dressed like the monks, from the air about him. Aristocratic and commanding, he was very different from the man they had awakened the night before. The proverb that the clothes made the man didnt seem to be true in this case.
“How did you meet my cousin?” Genji asked him bluntly. Hagar looked over at him. He knew that not telling him wasnt going to fly and wondered how much Shibito had told him. Probably he had given him a blunt “none of your business,” which was why Genji was asking him. But he still hesitated, even though he knew that this man had the authority to stop him from leaving, with or without his cousin. In fact, he could make Hagar just disappear and they both knew it.
“I met Shibito at Mamas,” Hagar told him. “Its a bar.” Hagar wondered if the wince that evoked was at the mention of the bar or Shibitos name. Hagar had figured out that it wasnt really his name from the slip that Genji had made last night. But he couldnt figure out why Genji was so upset that his cousin decided to change his name.
“I cant imagine him in a bar,” Genji said.
“He was the cook there, nothing more,” Hagar told him, hoping that the man wouldnt put two and two together and figure out that he had fucked Genjis cousin across space as the price of giving him a ride. “Shibito makes a mean stew.”
“Please dont call him that,” Genji told him, his eyes both hard and sad. “It isnt his name, no matter what he thinks.”
“Its better than „kitten, which is what Mama was calling him,” Hagar replied with a grin, hoping to cheer him up.
“No it isnt!” Genji practically shouted. “Do you know what youre talking about? I dont think so.
